Enemies Of The People - US Trailer 2010

Genre: documentary
Regie / directed by: Rob Lemkin , Thet Sambath

SYNOPSIS (suppied by the producers)
The Khmer Rouge ran what is regarded as one of the twentieth century's most brutal regimes. Yet the Killing Fields of Cambodia remain unexplained. Until now.

In ENEMIES OF THE PEOPLE the men and women who perpetrated the massacres -- from the foot-soldiers who slit throats to the party's ideological leader, Nuon Chea aka Brother Number Two -- break a 30-year silence to give testimony never before heard or seen.

Unprecedented access from top to bottom of the Khmer Rouge has been achieved through a decade of work by one of Cambodia's best investigative journalists, Thet Sambath.

Sambath is on a personal quest: he lost his own family in the Killing Fields. The film is his journey to discover not how but why they died. In doing so, he hears and understands for the first time the real story of his country's tragedy.

After years of visits and trust-building, Sambath finally persuades Brother Number Two to admit (again, for the first time) in detail how he and Pol Pot (the two supreme powers in the Khmer Rouge state) decided to kill party members whom they considered 'Enemies of the People'.

Sambath's remarkable work goes even one stage further: over the years he befriends a network of killers in the provinces who implemented the kill policy. For the first time, we see how orders created on an abstract political level translate into foul murder in the rice fields and forests of the Cambodian plain.

We have repeatedly used the expression 'for the first time'. This is because Sambath's work represents a watershed both in Cambodian historiography and in the country's quest for closure on one of the world's darkest episodes.

The United Nations and the Cambodian government have set up a tribunal to try the senior leaders of the Khmer Rouge for international crimes. Brother Number Two's trial is expected to start in 2010.

The trials are widely expected to deliver a form of justice but fewer expect the truth finally to come out through this process.

Sambath says: "Some may say no good can come from talking to killers and dwelling on past horror, but I say these people have sacrificed a lot to tell the truth. In daring to confess they have done good, perhaps the only good thing left. They and all the killers like them must be part of the process of reconciliation if my country is to move forward."

Summer 2008: We stayed at Amanjaya Hotel in Phnom Penh and must say that it's one of the best hotels in Phnom Penh (we stayed at lots of other hotels so I can make such comparison). The rooms are very spacious, beautiful decor, friendly, helpful staff, and the restaurant is so yummy... must try their fresh coconut juice. I believe every room (we stayed there twice during different periods) has the beautiful view of Tonglay Sap.

SEE some of the most rare footages and photographs in color of Cambodia in the 1920's. Cambodia was a beautiful and colorful nation to be seen by the Europeans. Ang Choulean a popular Fine Arts teacher at the Phnom Penh University who wrote and published many books in trying to keep Khmer beautiful Arts and Culture alive.

"At the sight of this temple, one feels one's spirit crushed, one's imagination surpassed. One looks, one admires, and, seized with respect, one is silent. For where are the words to praise a work of art that may not have its equal anywhere on the globe? ... What genius this Michalangelo of the East had, that he was capable of concaving such a work." He said: "See Angkor and Die." Henri Mouhot

Kambodscha: CITY OF THE GODS - Teil 6 von 6

UNLIKE other countries, Cambodia does not minimize Indian influence on the local culture. On the contrary, the people of the country generously acknowledge it.

Angkor Wat, the greatest of Khmer temples, is a text in itself. The hundreds of reliefs sculpted on its stones narrate the events from the Hindu Epics and the Puranas, and symbolically communicate the fundamental religious, philosophical, ethical and political principles of the Khmers at the time of Suryavarman. Varman was a title given to Kings and Pandita was title given to Brahmins.

Kambodscha: CITY OF THE GODS - Teil 5 von 6

ANGKOR Wat's narrative reliefs clearly refer to popular events from the Epics - The Ramayana and The Mahabharata and the Puranas, visually narrated in a way which is generally faithful to the original Sanskrit texts in terms of the plot - even down to the last detail. Ramayana The story of Rama is the most widely diffused tale in South and Southeast Asia. In Cambodia of the Angkorean period, it seems that the Ramayana in use pertained to Valmiki's tradition.

Kambodscha: CITY OF THE GODS - Teil 4 von 6

ANGKOR Wat's distinctive terraced towers rising above the skyline are in the form of lotus buds, one of Lord Vishnu's principal symbols. It was a place of devotion as well as an astronomical observatory. The legend was that the temple was not built by human hands but by Indra, the Lord of Heaven, who sailed down to earth for the purpose. Originally all nine great pinnacles were plated with gold, while the sculptures of incredible richness, covering the walls in high and low relief, were ablaze with color.

Kambodscha: CITY OF THE GODS - Teil 3 von 6

INDIA is a country of temples without equal but there is a certain irony in that one of the largest and most dramatic monuments to Hinduism rests not in India but thousands of miles away from the subcontinent amid the ruins of a metropolis hidden in the jungles of Cambodia. One of the largest cities of the ancient world, Angkor was built at the height of the Khmer Empire's supremacy in South East Asia. In the 12th century the vast temple of Angkor Wat, which is larger even than the Vatican, was built in the heart of the city by King Suryavarman II to honor Lord Vishnu.

Kambodscha: CITY OF THE GODS - Teil 2 von 6

IT is frequently said that Angkor was 'discovered' by the Europeans but this is patently nonsense and simply reflects a Eurocentric view. The Khmer never forgot the existence of their monuments. French naturalist Henri Mouhot stumbled across the city complex of Angkor Wat while on a zoological expedition. He was overwhelmed by the magnificence of these ruins hidden in the jungle and wrote: "One of these temples - a rival to that of Solomon, and erected by some ancient Michael Angelo - might take its place besides our most beautiful buildings - Grander than anything left to us by Greece or Rome ...it makes the traveler forget all the fatigues of the journey, filling him with admiration and delight, such as should be experienced on finding a verdant oasis in the sandy desert."

Kambodscha: CITY OF THE GODS - Teil 1 von 6

SITUATED between India and China, Southeast Asia has been the birthplace of several cultures, some of which rank among the world's greatest civilizations. Among the Indianized kingdoms which sprang up in Southeast Asia before the Common era, the great Khmer civilization and its capital, Angkor, in modern day Cambodia. The advent of Indians in Southeast Asia has hardly a parallel in history. In view of the ethnic affinities between the prehistoric Austro-Asiatic races of India and those of Suvarnabhumi, contact between the two regions may well go back to the remotest antiquity. Most of the countries of Southeast Asia came under the cultural and religious influence of India. This region was broadly referred to by ancient Indians as Suvarnabhumi (the Land of Gold) or Suvarnadvipa (the Island of Gold). Vedic Indians must have charted Java, Yawadvip, thousands of years ago because Yawadvip is mentioned in India's earliest epic, the Ramayana. The Ramayana reveals some knowledge of the eastern regions beyond seas; for instance Sugriva dispatched his men to Yavadvipa, the island of Java, in search of Sita

Golden Age of Khmer Cinema in 1960s Era Documented

Chou Davy, 27, hopes later this year to release his documentary about Cambodian cinema in the 1960s and 1970s, creating a record of a culture the Khmer Rouge regime of Pol Pot helped to destroy. Chou Davy lives in Paris and is the grandson of Vann Chan, a well-known filmmaker in Phnom Penh in the 1960s. 'Golden Slumber' will be shown in Cambodia, France, the U.S. and other countries, Chou Davy said during a recent interview in Washington.

Cambodian Cinema from 1960s Highlighted at Smithsonian's Freer Gallery

A grandson of the late Cambodian film maker, Vann Chan, screened on Sunday a trailer for a documentary about Cambodian cinema in the 1960s and 70s at the Freer Gallery of Art, Smithsonian Institute, in Washington DC.
Davy Chou, maker of the new film "Golden Slumbers,'' showed film clips and told the audience about the history of Cambodia's golden age of cinema and of the success of his grandfather's work at Vann Chan Film Production. He spoke about an array of Cambodian screen stars and filmmakers. Davy Chou, whose parents are Cambodian and who grew up in France, hopes to complete the documentary before the end of the year.
Chou says he was shocked when he realized how his grandfather's legacy is being forgotten. Nearly all of the film stars from that era were killed by the Khmer Rouge. Many cinemas become karaoke parlors, hotels or were taken over by squatters. And a lady occupying his grandparent's home said to him and his mother "Oh I saw those films but we threw them away!"

The White Building of Phnom Penh: A story of fusion between a building and its people

"You don't only live there, it is part of your daily life, more like it actively takes part in your life", a resident of the White Building

Built in the 1970s following the design of Cambodia´s star architect Vann Molyvann, the White Building located on Sothearos Boulevard in downtown Phnom Penh has experienced ups and downs. Abandoned and unfinished during the Khmer Rouge period, it became a popular living place for various artists after the war and later on for Phnom Penh sex workers usually working in, or close to, the building. Now threatened from being evicted from their homes due to planned land development projects by the Cambodian government, the people of the White Building show no willingness to easily leave behind what has become more than their home.

Lone Brothers Bar - Sihanoukville

Schwimmende Dörfer - Leben am Tonlesap See

Vollpfosten in Kambodscha!!!

Phnom Penh - Die Stadt der Huegel - Teil 3

Phnom Penh - Die Stadt der Huegel - Teil 2

Phnom Penh - Die Stadt der Huegel - Teil 1

The movie deals with a meeting between a western woman traveler and the city of Phnom Penh in Cambodia. This meeting between the two leaves the traveler with unpleasant feelings of heaviness and depression. The traveler goes through a personal journey and learns more about the city and its people. She comes across many different stories: from the ancient mythology, past and recent history and our present time. By putting together these stories, the city and its nature reveal itself. During this journey the traveler and the city becomes one.

The city becomes a junction of stories that bring together; the ancient story of the character of Penh- the woman that established the city; the Buddhist belief that compassion offers redemption from the roots of pain and suffering; the present memory of a nation that killed itself - genocide; and the urban present of a bare and wounded city.
The city of Phnom Penh lives the tension between the basic belief in compassion and humanity, and the acknowledgment of the cruelty within.

This movie was made with artistic and documentary skills. There is a distinction between the authentic photography of the city and its people; and between the mythological stories that are presented with a performance like artistic language; a sign language.
The mythological stories are a triptych of 3 pieces. Each part tells a mythological story based on the myth of the city Phnom Penh. The last part of the triptych is a fiction, never happened and based on the recent history of Cambodia between 1975-1979.
